'Sofia's Touch' Featurette & The Beguiled Film Review

This week, I went to an early screening for Focus Features THE BEGUILED, Sofia Coppola’s remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood movie adaption, starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Ferrell and Kirsten Dunst. While the film creates gorgeous atmospheric imagery of the South, I was hoping for a little more high drama and thrills.

The Southern Gothic period drama involves the undercurrent tensions in an all girl’s school during the Civil War when an injured Yankee soldier (Ferrell) is brought into the picture.

I thought all the actors brought their A game to this film, the subtle looks that conveyed longing, innocence, curiosity, scheming and reserve without a word said.

The women spend their days sheltered in their school from the war, learning French, handwriting lessons and sewing until they take in Corporal John McBurney and nurse him back to health. However, the longer he stays at the house, the more intrigued each of the girls become with him and the more influence he has over them.

It’s not until his various seductions get exposed, resulting in an accident and his revealing violence, that forces the ladies to set aside their own hidden rivalries and figure a way to get out of their predicament.

There are some graphic scenes of McBurney’s injury that is not for the faint of heart but despite the serious drama feel, there are lighter moments as well as some disturbingly funny scenes as the women serve their comeuppance to him.

I am generally not into these smaller indie type films but moviegoers that like quiet period films with a slow burn and beautiful, ethereal cinematography will enjoy The Beguiled.
